How to Apply Self Tanner Evenly

BAKING SODA AND LEMON

If you’re wondering what to do when a fake tan goes patchy, one natural remedy to evening out tan lines can be found right in your kitchen. This simple trick involves combining lemon juice and baking soda until it makes a paste. Then, rub the paste on your tan, and let it sit for a few minutes. The acid in the lemon will strip the tan and baking soda is a natural exfoliant. This method is perfect if you just have a few patches that you need to even out.

EXFOLIATION

One of the best solutions for how to apply self tanner evenly is with some good old-fashioned exfoliation. Whether you’re using a natural exfoliant like a brown sugar body scrub or you bought one designed specifically for evening out your tan, gently exfoliating your skin will have it glowing in no time. If you have specific tan lines or if you are looking for how to fix a patchy tan of uneven color, make sure you exfoliate those areas but refrain from the rest of your tan. This will help even everything out and make it look natural.

Be sure to use a gentle exfoliant or exfoliating mitt for optimal results. Our exfoliating mitts are available for purchase at our studio. They are perfect for removing your old spray tan and preparing your skin for a fresh tan.

DIY SPRAY TAN ERASER

Although we share a commercial spray tan eraser below, you can also make your own using baby oil and baking soda. Again, baking soda is a great exfoliant and baby oil removes a spray tan gently. If you want to know how to fix self-tanner streaks or patches using simple supplies, this method is a great bet.

Other Ways to Even Out Tan Lines

Want to know how to even out a tan fast? These go-to products are some of our favorites:

  • Hair Removal Cream - It might sound crazy, but old school hair removal creams like Veet help remove a tan and can even out tan lines in places that you don’t mind losing a little hair. Simply rub it on, follow the instructions on the bottle, and wipe it off.

  • Self-Tanner - That’s right, sometimes the best way to fix annoying tan lines is to carefully paint them in to fill in the gaps! If you recently got a spray tan and have some self-tanner or self-tanning mousse at home, use a makeup brush to fill the tan lines in with self-tanner. Leave the tanner for 1 to 4 hours before showering off, depending on deep of a tan you want to achieve.

How to Apply Self Tanner Without Streaks

Even the best spray tan can come out looking streaky if you’re not careful, so in addition to sharing how to even out a tan and any tan lines, we also want to share some helpful spray tan tips to avoid the dreaded streaky tan.

  • Bring appropriate clothing to your tanning appointment - After your tan, you should wear loose-fitting clothing, so you don’t mess up your tan.

  • Stay dry - To help your tan develop, you’ll want to avoid all moisture for at least 4 to 5 hours.

  • Shower smart - We recommend showering at least 4 hours after your spray tan, but no longer than 24 hours after. When you do shower, be gentle and only use oil-free cleansers.

  • Pat yourself dry instead of rubbing - Self-explanatory but try not to rub your body with a towel after your spray tan.

  • Moisturize - After your shower, moisturize with an oil-free moisturizer. If your skin is hydrated, your tan will fade more evenly.

  • Avoid swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, and saunas.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, products containing acids, massages, fashion tape, bandages, and anything else that may strip your tan (as we saw above, these are great tips for how to fix self-tanner streaks, but not as good if you want to maintain your glow).

  • Keep your hands off your skin as much as possible.

Many people want to know how to even out a tan and tan lines and these tips and tricks will help. Don’t let annoying tan lines ruin your look and enjoy your beautiful glow longer with a more even fade. Get glowing!
